The Story of Ganesha's Elephant Head

Project SIGN emerged as the formal successor to Project SAUCER, evolving into an official and high-priority program under the Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) on January 23, 1948. (ATIC later became the National Air and Space Intelligence Center - NASIC). The primary goal of Project SIGN was to investigate whether reported UFOs could be Soviet secret weapons or potentially extraterrestrial objects. The team initially believed that a few months of work would allow them to reach a definitive conclusion. As part of their investigation, the staff reviewed all available military intelligence on German weaponry and aeronautical capabilities to assess whether any advanced technology might have been acquired by the Soviet Union.
Project SIGN reviewed 243 UFO sighting reports and, by February 1949, concluded that there was “no definite and conclusive evidence” to confirm or refute the existence of these unidentified objects as actual aircraft of unknown and unconventional design. The project’s findings attributed most sightings to misidentifications of known objects, psychological factors such as hysteria or hallucinations, or deliberate hoaxes. While it did not completely dismiss the possibility of extraterrestrial phenomena, it recommended that military intelligence continue to oversee UFO investigations.
