The Story of Ganesha's Elephant Head

Initiated under the direction of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the Defense Appropriations Acts of Fiscal Years 2008 and 2010 allocated $22 million to the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) to investigate long-term and over-the-horizon aerospace threats to the United States. This funding led to the establishment of the AAWSAP in 2009, which is also referred to as AATIP.
While AAWSAP was an official DIA-managed program, AATIP was not an official Department of Defense (DoD) program. The term AATIP was used informally after AAWSAP's cancellation, referring to an unofficial effort within the DoD to research UAP sightings and related phenomena.
The primary mission of AAWSAP/AATIP was to investigate potential next-generation aerospace technologies across 12 specific areas, including advanced propulsion, unconventional materials, and signature reduction. Although UFO/UAP research was not explicitly outlined in the contract’s statement of work, the private sector organization contracted to manage the program did engage in UFO research. This included:
The DIA did not authorize or seek out the paranormal research aspect, though it was part of the private sector organization’s activities.
The AAWSAP/AATIP contract produced exploratory papers on the scientific areas outlined in the statement of work. However, these papers were not thoroughly peer-reviewed. No substantive UAP case work was uncovered by AARO beyond the review of Project BLUE BOOK and other cases, along with interviews and unrelated paranormal investigations.
The program was terminated in 2012 due to concerns from DIA and DoD. Efforts to revive the program through a new initiative, KONA BLUE, were unsuccessful.
